July 26th, 2010Effective Use Of Pepper Spray
Pepper spray is a highly useful self defense spray. Also called OC (oleoresin capsicum) these sprays contain derivative of pepper capsaicin and is composed of small granular particles giving it the ability to be projected through aerosol spray. The amount of capsaicin a spray contains determines how hot it is. Naturally, the hotter the material the more potent its potential as a self defense spray.
Available without a permit, defense sprays are easy to acquire, but some states restrict some types and chemicals. The common pepper spray contains the “OC” derivative, so always check the type of spray prior to purchase.
These sprays are of course inflammatory to ones coming in contact with it. Pepper spray or defense sprays containing CS or CN chemicals have been proven not as effective as OC (oleoresin capsicum) . When hit with an OC spray, the recipient will expeirence pain and temporary blindness as the chemical causes irritation, swelling of mucous membranes and tearing of the eyes.
The user must be careful to only use a self defense spray when absolutely necessary. However, when a credible threat to the safety or health emerges, use of the spray must be quick and determined.
Based on years of experience, we recommend the following tips when carrying and using self defense or pepper sprays.
1. Always hold the dispenser upright in your hand and place the thumb on the top of the spray while being careful to point the dispensing end away from you. Keeping the dispenser handy is key to being prepared for a potential attack.
2. When confronting a threat, shoot the spray at the attackers face and move it in a back and forth motion or figure 8 pattern while walking backwards away from the assailant. If possible, try to stand up wind to reduce the chance of self contamination.
3. Get the spray into your attackers’ mouth and eyes. The spray may not stop him all together but will slow him down enough so you can get away. Immediately after application , leave the area and get to a public place and call 911.
Many pepper sprays are available in various applications. Frequently, these are disguised as lipstick, pens, on key chains and pagers. Not all pepper sprays are effective and contain various agents. Pepper spray containing CS or CN chemicals have been proven not as effective as OC..
Treating one’s personal safety as an individual responsibility requires being prepared for any eventuality. And a good pepper or self defense spray is a solid investment.
